Anyone fancy a rooftop kickabout?

We have been fortunate enough to have been working with SEL since the Olympics in 2012 when we assisted in the equestrian build at Greenwich Park, a relationship that last evolved to a point where we have become their go-to crewing supplier for additional support.

This job was to assist the SEL team to install an all-weather synthetic turf rooftop MUGA at Hackney's new "state-of-the-art" Britannia Leisure Centre, which contains several swimming pools, a water flume, rooftop tennis courts, and football pitches.

The biggest problem the teams faced was the weather, the start date kept getting pushed back firstly because of rain and secondly due to the snow & ice!

First job was to get kit & supplies up onto the roof and there was a lot! Once everything was in situ the build could begin. A gravel layer was put down, to minimise undulations in the roof, then a raft of modular, interlocking drainage units are installed across the entire roof area. The SELSports units were inverted in the tiled areas so that red anti-shear connectors could be inserted to secure the heavy duty rubber tiles. A prefabricated shockpad was installed directly on the SELSports units in the pitch area, the system was finished off with a 20mm sand dressed synthetic grass with netball and 5-a-side football line markings.

As well as the synthetic grass rooftop MUGA, SELSports designed and installed the fencing and roof netting.

With crew able to navigate some tricky weather conditions where the roof turned into an ice rink for several days, all targets and schedules were met utilising over 300 crew, across 70 days for a total of 2,500 hours onsite.
