The institution that is the Sports Personality of the Year Awards has been running since 1954 when Chris Chataway pipped Roger Bannister for the title. Many true legends have been honoured since as it has grown massively since its inception. We have been honoured to work on the event ourselves for several years too. It is always one that we proudly declare an interest in to friends and family at Christmas!
The requirement from White Productions was no small one – deliver ALL technical aspects of the show! Errr…yeh…easy!?!? With the event happening in Birminghams NEC, 40 local crew were supported by 25 further Gallows from Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester and London. A tiered management structure ensured clarity of leadership from the Senior Crew Chief (SCC) who liaised directly with the White Productions management. He was ably supported by four Crew Chief Legends who led the teams. The Legend status is only awarded to those crewmen who have racked up in excess of 10,000hrs onsite (making them truly world class)! These guys then took responsibility for sound, lighting, rigging, cameras and AV. The SCC also oversaw the massive tiered section of seating.
Results
5 days and nights onsite. All tasks completed ahead of schedule. Only 75 crew were needed despite initial estimates of 104. Major budget savings. 2,600hrs onsite.
