Transferable Skills to Roles Within Our Business - textSectionComponent

Whether you’re looking to make a flying start to your career or have experience and are looking for a change of scenery, the events industry offers a challenging and friendly environment. At Gallowglass, we’re constantly on the lookout for more people to join our expanding teams. Our event crews come from diverse backgrounds, each with different experiences and expertise they can bring to the table. Similarly, our office teams work hard to keep the business performing at its best.

It’s important to remember that experience in the event industry isn’t vital for joining our team, and that there are lots of transferable skills that will bolster your chances of starting a career with us. In this article, we’ll be looking at some of the most common transferable skills that we’re on the lookout for, whether as a crew member or as part of our office team

On-Site Crewing

Building and Construction

Not only is being a member of our on-site crew a physically demanding role, but it can also help to have a knowledge of building and construction. If you’ve worked in a construction environment before, then it’s likely you’ll have some transferable skills that can be applied to being a crew member. Additionally, the team ethic is equally as important; being a good team player will go a long way to making you a successful crewman.

Engineering

Similarly, if you’ve got experience in engineering, then this will stand you in good stead to join our team. For some of the more technical builds, an engineering mindset combined with an ability to problem-solve will not be taken for granted. Additionally, an engineering background could also offer opportunities within our office environment.

Electrical and Carpentry

Our setups can be anything from a corporate event to a televised awards ceremony, which means there will always be a need for carpentry and electrical experience. Knowledge of either of these will come in handy when building and taking down sets efficiently, while keeping the team safe and secure at all times.

Drivers

If you have experience driving on-site vehicles such as forklifts, telehandlers, scissor lifts and cherrypickers, not only is this is a great skill to have but it can mean you’d be in high demand across all the event sectors. All of our operators are trained and certified by recognised awarding bodies so even if you aren’t qualified, express your interest and we’ll get you trained up. Equally, if you have experience driving large vehicles, then this could be a potential role for you here at Gallowglass as well.

Lights, Camera, Action

If you’ve worked with lighting, filming or any other component of a live set, then working within the events industry is a great option to expand your career. Our teams are made up of experienced riggers, follow spot operators and general live set operators, so previous experience in these fields would be very useful indeed.

Office Team

Sales and Marketing

If you’ve worked in a sales and marketing capacity before, or have qualifications in these areas, then this can be a great way to get started. Roles at Gallowglass in these functions are available less frequently than the on-site crew, but as we are constantly looking to expand, new roles can be made available.

Customer Service and Administration

As a company, we pride ourselves with keeping our house in good working order. This means taking care of our customers and ensuring all information is well managed and up to date. The recent GDPR changes mean that we have to be stricter than ever with our handling of data; therefore, our customer service and administration teams are vital to keeping our team in good shape.

Accounts

As with all business, it always comes down to the numbers. Our accounts team keep a close eye on the financials and keep us audit-ready. If you have experience working within a financial capacity or have relevant qualifications, this is a great way to pursue your career within the events sector.

Health and Safety

A vital department here at Gallowglass, our Health and Safety team is responsible for ensuring that everyone that works in the office, and out on-site is suitably trained to perform their job. We want our teams to be happy and healthy at all times, so being health and safety proficient is vital. A health and safety background could open opportunities both in the office and out on the sites.

Black Hat / Project Management

Project management is a vital skill to have when working within the events industry. Being able to manage timelines while keeping everyone in the loop is an important skill to have. Whether you’ve managed events for a college or university, worked as a freelance event planner or just like to be super organised, project management is a diverse role that will keep you on your toes and can lead to black hat status.

If you’re looking to kick off your career within the events industry, then joining one of our on-site teams is a great place to start. We’re always looking for new members! Whether you’re looking for event crew jobs in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds or Birmingham, make sure you get in touch and fill out our online application form.
